The WE Campaign is a project of The Alliance for Climate Protection-a nonprofit, nonpartisan effort founded by Nobel laureate and former Vice President Al Gore. The goal of the Alliance is to build a movement that creates the political will to solve the climate crisis-in part through repowering America with 100 percent of its electricity from clean energy sources within 10 years.

After an extraordinary 2007 legislative session that set Minnesota on the path to a comprehensive plan for curbing greenhouse gas emissions, the 2008 legislature encountered delays in implementing real climate change solutions. First, Governor Pawlenty's Office of Energy Security stalled release of the Minnesota Climate Change Advisory Group's recommendations for realizing the goals set in 2007.

On March 29, 2008, the Will Steger Foundation launched its second Global Warming 101 Expedition, a 62-day, 1400-mile dogsled expedition across Ellesmere Island. Explorer Will Steger selected six young adventurers to join him in an effort to educate youth, inspire international cooperation and empower the next generation of leaders in environmental advocacy.

The team travelled in Canada's High Arctic, site of the last remaining ice shelves in North America, to capture disintegrating ice caps, retreating glaciers and the destruction of wildlife habitat.

Two ice shelves in Canada's far north have lost massive sections since August. The Wilkins Ice Shelf has experienced further break-up with an area of about 160 square kilometers breaking off. Researchers monitoring daily satellite images of Greenland's glaciers have discovered break-ups at two of the largest glaciers in the last month. Scientists saying that a global warming "tipping point" in the Arctic seems to be happening before their eyes.

Do It Green! Minnesota

Most people have a mental wish list of places they would like to see in their lifetime. Some are local and others may be halfway around the world. It may seem unimaginable to think that our global terrain would be so affected that some of these places may not exist when we finally visit the travel agent, but it’s true. Thousands of places are endangered by over-tourism, over-development, pollution, de-forestation and global warming.

Have We Hit Peak Oil Yet?

Author
BRIAN MERCHANT
MN PostCarbon

We need to figure out how to live without fossil fuels for two reasons: First, burning fossil fuels remains the biggest contributor to greenhouse gases, the cause of global warming and climate change. Second, the world's supply of oil and natural gas will soon decline, which will result in increased prices. When the price of gasoline reaches $4 per gallon, the price of oil reaches $90 a barrel and natural gas levels off at $12 per million BTU, affordability becomes an issue for everything we do.

Global warming: it's a big topic these days, and people want to know what they can do to help. Most people don't realize it, but one way to reduce global warming is to recycle paper products. Paper recycling helps in the following ways:

Energy Savings-Pulp and paper is the 5th largest industrial energy consumer in the world! Production of recycled paper uses 65% less energy than paper production using raw materials. Reducing energy consumption reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
